So what we now know is that holograms for smartphones work by using a similar principle to regular LCDs. They are made up of a display and a virtual projection unit and when these two are joined together, the result is the hologram. The secret behind this is that the display is transparent while the image is slightly opaque.


So what else is new for holograms for smartphones? Well, the same thing that made regular LCDs opaque in the first place has also been used here. The latest generation of mobile phones will come with touch screen technology. In effect, instead of the display being just a flat image, it will actually have an image of a finger on the screen which is then made to move.

This is done to unlock the phone, make calls, or even to scan the finger for security purposes (such as when a security guard checks you for fake identification documents). Of course, there is also the display. The display can be made up of many tiny pixels, all of which will tell the phone its location and what direction it is heading. But of course, it would be foolish to think that holograms can replace touch screen phones because they still require a physical form. They are still a long way off from becoming a common feature in phones. What they can do though is make it easier for people to enter information or make their phone do other things without having to actually touch the screen.
